The work brings together Shazia Khan’s moving images and photographic language with an original live score composed and performed by Ole Reimer. Images, sound and space become part of the same artistic expression, creating an immersive experience in which the visual and the musical constantly influence and respond to one another. The work explores what lies beneath the visible surface of everyday life. Khan’s images move between people, places and fleeting moments, drawing attention to details and stories that might otherwise remain unnoticed. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, The Unseen invites the audience to slow down, look and listen – and to experience the images through sound as well as sight. The music is composed specifically for the visual material and the space in which the work is presented. Reimer works with composition, improvisation and recorded sounds, allowing the score to develop in dialogue with the images and the surroundings. Each performance therefore becomes a meeting between the work, the architecture and the moment. The Unseen has been presented in a range of spaces and contexts, including Bellahøj Church, Operaen på Christiania and Mariakirken during Kulturnatten in Copenhagen. In 2025, the work was also presented at the Vernacular Institute in Mexico City. The project is part of Khan and Reimer’s long-standing artistic collaboration, which brings together photography, film, music and stories about people, identity and lived experience. Beneath the heart-shaped mountain that gives the town its name, children play, hunters travel across frozen fjords, sled dogs wait beside weathered houses, and traditions continue within a rapidly changing Arctic landscape. This series explores peaceful endurance — the quiet resilience of a community living in close relationship with nature and with one another. Rather than focusing on catastrophe, the photographs observe moments of continuity, care, and coexistence: a child suspended in play above frozen ground, a solitary figure crossing the ice, the intimacy between people, animals, and landscape, and the calm persistence of ordinary life in an environment often imagined only through extremes. The Arctic is frequently represented as empty, threatened, or disappearing. In Uummannaq, however, daily life reveals something more complex: a society shaped by mutual dependence, cultural memory, and adaptation. Children play beneath mountains older than memory; hunters navigate changing ice conditions; families preserve traditions while negotiating the pressures of modernization and environmental change. The series does not seek to romanticize isolation or transform Greenland into a symbol of climate anxiety. Instead, it reflects on coexistence — between humans and nature, between tradition and change, between solitude and community. Peace here is not presented as the absence of hardship, but as a form of balance: a way of living that depends upon respect for the land, for weather, for animals, and for one another. At a time when visual narratives are dominated by conflict and spectacle, these photographs focus on quieter forms of human strength. The local tradition here includes a third gender, called Muxe. The Muxe are neither regarded as men or women, but socially in the society and in their families, they behave as women. They often wear traditional female clothing, and they have a special social status in the Zapotec culture. https://shaz.dk/Workshop Photography Workshops I offer workshops in photography and visual storytelling for children, young people, and adults. In my workshops, photography becomes a way of exploring the world around us. It is not only about technique or taking the “right” photograph, but about developing your own way of seeing: What do I notice? What do I want to tell? And how can a photograph express something that may be difficult to put into words? Over the years, I have facilitated photography workshops in a wide range of settings in Denmark, Greenland, and Mexico. I have also worked as a resident artist with ten school classes, developing longer creative photography programmes with children and young people, as well as leading workshops and participatory projects in social housing communities. The workshops can explore themes such as portraiture, everyday life, identity, dreams, place, and belonging. Participants work with simple photographic exercises and are encouraged to experiment freely. Depending on the project, we use digital cameras, mobile phones, or Polaroid cameras. Photography can also be combined with sound recordings, interviews, and personal stories. An important part of my workshops is creating a space where there is no single “right” way of seeing the world. Through photography, personal stories, music and sound, the presentation offers an insight into Mexican and Zapotec culture while exploring questions of gender, identity and belonging. She is a trained commercial photographer and storyteller. She has lived and travelled extensively for 8 years in South America. Lately her focus has been on stories from Mexcio, Pakistan and Denmark.Her work ranges from feature portrait stories to more abstract photoseries. Her work has been shown at numerous exhibitions and been published by the largest Danish newspaper, Jyllandsposten, Al Jazeera and in books and magazines. In 2020 she was awarded Honorable Mentions in the International Photo Competition PX3 in Paris, and in Tokyo Photo Awards. In 2023 she was awarded Silver in the International Photo Competition PX3 in Paris.
